Kendal at Oberlin: Resident Satisfaction Survey Says…

Residents of Kendal at Oberlin are very happy living at the retirement community in Oberlin, Ohio, whether they live independently in a cottage or apartment, or in the community’s Stephens Care Center.
Every two years, the Ohio Department of Aging and the Office of the State Long-Term Care Ombudsman conduct a satisfaction survey of residents in licensed long-term care facilities to understand their thoughts and feelings about the quality of care they are receiving and the quality of life they are enjoying.
The Overall Satisfaction Score for Kendal at Oberlin’s residential care facility (assisted living) was 96.4, while statewide the result was 92.3. Kendal scored higher than 95 percent in areas such as activities, choice, care and services, communication, meals and dining, and resident environment. Areas that received a score of 98 percent or higher were: employee relations, facility environment, and general satisfaction.
100 Percent Satisfaction
When asked, “Are you satisfied with the activities offered here?” 100 percent of respondents said yes. And that is no surprise, with a range of activities that includes concerts, lectures, and opportunities for creative expression.
The employees at Kendal at Oberlin are also a large factor in resident satisfaction; 100 percent of respondents said that employees do not force them to participate in activities and allow them to do the things they are able to do on their own. All respondents also said that employees are courteous, friendly, treat residents with respect and are always available when needed. Everyone also said that people in charge treat residents with respect and they would always feel comfortable speaking up if there was a problem.
The community itself also received high marks: 100 percent of survey takers said they enjoy the location of Kendal at Oberlin and that they feel safe living there. Respondents also agreed that the community is kept clean and is considered a pleasant place for people to visit. Residents also felt that they had enough privacy in their room or apartment when desired.
Satisfied in Stephens Care Center
A second, separate survey was given regarding nursing home resident satisfaction. Kendal at Oberlin’s Stephens Care Center received an overall satisfaction score of 91.4; statewide satisfaction was 87.1. Areas including overall satisfaction, direct care and nursing assistants, therapy, and resident environment all received scores above 90, and laundry, administration, facility environment and general satisfaction were above 95 percent. Again, employees and environment received high marks of satisfaction.

Most importantly, when asked, “Overall, do you like living here?” in the Resident Satisfaction Survey, 100 percent of Kendal at Stephens Care Center residents said “Yes!” A survey for residents living in cottages and apartments will go out in June.
